A crest from a staff of office, or chief’s staff, of the Yaka, from the south-western Congo. With a charming female figure. Made of hard wood, originally dyed dark brown. With a typical hairstyle of three crests and with arms lying against the body. The figure was probably once ‘clothed’ (see the light-coloured areas on her hips).
Below, on the sleeve in which the actual staff was once inserted, there is a wrapping of copper wire and incised letters (‘MU’?). A minimal, old loss to the left crest of the hairstyle and a crack to the sleeve on the back. Otherwise no damage. A charming, interesting piece with good shiny patina as a result of long use.
Height: c. 35 cm. First half of the 20th century.
Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
