A very original tobacco pipe, made of carved wood, with a carefully and finely formed ape figure on the front of the pipe bowl, carved out from the same piece. The pipe bowl is made of hard, light-coloured wood and coloured dark reddish-brown. It has a rim of sheet iron above, and is also inlaid with sheet metal. The mouthpiece of thin bamboo cane is also connected to the pipe bowl by means of sheet iron.
A fine object with good patina and light-coloured, worn areas through protracted use. A white inscription on the underside of the pipe bowl (‘Chokwe Zambia’) and an inventory number. Length: 21 cm (the entire pipe);
Height: c. 8 cm (the ape). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
