Bamileke, Cameroon Grasslands: a large slit drum, carved from one piece of wood.
A hollowed tree trunk carved into a form. On each carrying end it bears a large carved buffalo head. The drum was struck with wooden drumsticks on the thin ‘tongues’ in the middle. These large slit drums served as a means of communication (‘talking drums’). Their six to seven different tones could reach up to twenty km away. An impressive, very old piece from the possession of the ‘Fon’ (chief, sultan) of Bandjoun. It has a good patina with some age-related cracks. Length: 220 cm. Diameter: 41 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
