Igala, Nigeria: a large, black mask with four eyes.

Igala, Nigeria: a large, black mask with four eyes. - Tribal Art

The Igala people live in south-eastern Nigeria, where the Niger and Benue rivers meet, between the Yoruba, Idoma and Ibo. The Igala have a distinct ancestor cult and the majority of their face masks (they also have animal masks) represent ancestors. A special feature of this piece: the mask has four eyes. A rare object, with good, old usage patina (also on the interior). No significant damage.
Height: 33 cm; width: 23 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Sale, Ketterer, Munich, 20.4.1991, lot 374; then: Dr. Gregor Eising, Munich; currently: Dr. Karl-Ferdinand Schädler, Munich.
