A ‘doll’ in typical style of the Ibibio, from south-east Nigeria. Carved from hard wood and dyed dark brown. With high coiffure, stylised, pointed face with decorative scars on both cheeks and an open mouth in rhomboid shape. The bent, short arms lie closely against the body and the entire figure stands firmly on broad, square legs. Such dolls were carried by the women of the Ibibio as fertility dolls in their clothing, or used by girls as playthings.
The present, stylistically perfect Ibibio doll has two cracks due to age on the front and a small loss at the back of the hair. Otherwise, no damage, yet with a very good, old shiny patina due to protracted use.
Height: 30.5 cm; width: 8.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
