Yoruba, Nigeria: a beautiful ‘mother and child figure’. Style: Abeokuta.
A charming figure of a mother, who sits on a finely executed stool, holds her child on her knee and breast-feeds it. The high, round crested coiffure of the mother, originally blue-coloured (with ‘bluing’), indicates the style from the region of the town Abeokuta. She also displays typical tribal decorative scars on her face, bangles, a necklace of blue glass beads as well as a belt of red glass beads. A small loss to the head of the child and two minor cracks to the plinth. Otherwise no damage. Good, shiny patina.
Height: 24 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Christopher Huet Collection, Paris; currently: Austrian private collection.
