The Bambara, workers of the land in the savanna of Mali, have six classes of age groups. In the third stage, ‘jo’, the young men are at an age to marry. Then the youths travel with such figures from village to village, looking for a young woman. Therefore these figures are called ‘nyeleni’ (‘small, pretty girl’) or also ‘jo-nyeleni’.
The present, sitting ‘nyeleni’ is carved of hard wood, is dyed black, displays a characteristic crested coiffure, ornaments (bangles and a necklace with pendants), as well as typical tribal decorative scarification marks on her head, chest and upper thighs. A piece in clear Bambara style, with colour scuffing on the head, neck, arms, chest and abdomen, as well as with good shiny patina through protracted use.
Height: 54 cm. First half of the 20th century.
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
