Bambara (or Bamana), Mali: a small, very beautifully crafted female figure, known as ‘nyeleni’ or ‘jo-nyeleni’.
The Bambara, workers of the land in the savanna of Mali, have six age groups which every Bambara male must proceed through in the course of his life. Each group has a bush camp, instruction and initiation examination. The third stage of this system of classes of age is called ‘jo’ – and in this stage the young men attain marriageable age. Then they go ‘looking for a bride’: they trek from village to village with such figures, called ‘nyeleni’ (‘small, pretty girl’) and thus seek such a ‘small, pretty girl’ to marry. The present female figure is an especially finely conceived ‘nyeleni’ (or ‘jo-nyeleni’). It is carved from hard wood, dyed dark brown and stands on a round plinth. In typical Bambara style, with a carefully crafted head, with characteristic crested coiffure including braid above the forehead and two plaits on each side at the ears, as well as with typical tribal decorative scars on the chest and lower abdomen. A rare example of such a finely worked ‘Bambara nyeleni’. An old crack on the left arm, with an old original repair (an iron staple on the back). Slight colour abrasion in exposed areas. Otherwise no damage. Good, shiny patina.
