These typical, ‘phallic’ ancestor figures of the Dagari, which are abstracted into a reversed ‘Y’, were first made known to a wider circle in the nineties of the previous century. The Dagari are relatives of the Lobi, who live in the south-west of Burkina Faso and in the north-west of Ghana. Their significant ancestor sculptures, known as ‘kpin sebla’, were set up in hidden places or in shrines, and were only allowed to be seen by ‘initiates’. These figures received sacrificial offerings of millet, millet gruel or the blood of sacrificed animals. But only on the front. Hence ‘authentic’ Dagari ancestor figures always show encrusted sacrificial patina only on the front side.
The present, male ancestor figure of the Dagari shows this ‘classical’, heavily stylised type. It has a distinct head and a chin point on the front, a long body, broad hips with sketched genitalia, widely spread legs and round ‘feet’. Carved in hard, reddish-brown wood. This Dagari ancestor displays a heavy, encrusted sacrificial patina on its front side (facing the entrance of the ancestor shrine). On the reverse, the figure is smooth and unadorned. A small, old break on the left side of the ‘body’. Otherwise, no damage. A ‘classical’, old example of this sculptural type.
Height: 72 cm; width: 29 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Viennese private collection.
Lit.: ‘Lobi’ by Daniela Bognolo, ill. 3.
