Indonesia, Island of Sumba: a typical ‘Hinggi’ shoulder or skirt wrap made of cotton, dyed in Ikat technique in transversal rows with half figures, mythological animals and symbolic motifs.
A characteristic ‘Hinggi’ for men from eastern Sumba. The cotton fabric is dyed black-brown, red and blue in transversal stripes. In Ikat technique, according to which the warp threads are bound off and dyed prior to weaving. That means that the weaver must know precisely what she must bind off during dyeing prior to weaving, in order to achieve the desired pattern following weaving. Infallible signs of Ikat-dyed fabric: the borders of the coloured areas never have exact, sharp edges, but rather they are always irregularly ‘smudged’. The present ‘Hinggi’ patterns display human half-figures with raised arms, mythological animals such as winged horses etc., as well as star-shaped symbols etc. A beautiful, old, very carefully crafted textile (lightly faded in parts). For secondary use as a wall hanging, backed with light brown fabric and furnished with a hanging cord. No damage.
