Dayak, Borneo, Kalimantan, Sarawak: the basket of an Iban Dayak shaman, filled with 16 ‘helpful spirits’.
An old, woven basket of an Iban Dayak shaman, filled with 16 of his ‘helpful spirits’. The shaman used these ‘helpful spirits’ to fulfil his different tasks, such as healing the sick, making prophecies, oracles etc. The 16 ‘spirit figures’ are all made of carved wood and partly dyed brown or black. They are depicted standing or seated. One of the figures displays an animal on its head and a quiver on the back, others carry receptacles etc. All 16 ‘helpful spirit’ figures display a good, rather old usage patina.
Height: 23 cm (the basket alone); diameter: 17 cm (basket above). The ‘helpful spirit’ figures: height: from 5.5 cm to 24.5 cm.
