A Tibetan ‘book’, consisting of nine leaves of handmade paper. 17 pages of which are handwritten horizontally in Tibetan script. Each page displays two pictures of Lamaistic deities or demons, painted with tempera colours, on both outer edges. The old ‘book’ lies between two book covers made of wood, which on the outside are painted with red lacquer and decorated with reliefs. The upper cover displays four depictions of the Buddha, the lower two dragons with a central lotus blossom and a vessel with the ‘elixir of eternal life’ in the middle. On the inside the book covers display painted pictures: in the upper section, five depictions of Lamaist gods; in the lower section, an abbot or the founder of a sect in the middle, flanked by four monks of the ‘Yellow Hat sect’ (‘Gelugpa’). A ‘book’ with good usage patina on both covers on the outside and on the edges of the leaves. There is no significant damage.
Dimensions: 10.2 cm x 38 cm x 2.5 cm.
