Burma (Myanmar): a ‘celestial’ dancer (‘Apsara’), riding on a white elephant.
A three-dimensional sculpture made of hard wood (probably teak). It depicts a ‘celestial’ dancer, an ‘Apsara’ (a mythical being, part human, part divine) in a dance posture, as she rides on her (originally white) elephant. The ‘Apsara’ displays a tall winged crown, court robes and jewellery. The reverse side of the sculpture is flat and smooth. It is a very charming piece, with some age related cracks and colour scuffing, especially in the white of the elephant. Otherwise there is no significant damage.
Height: 78 cm; length: c. 37 cm.
