Lotto No. 234

Burma (Myanmar): a rare figure from the ‘Nat religion’ in Burma, sitting on an ‘Ogre’ (spirit, demon), richly decorated with mirrored plates.

Burma (Myanmar): a rare figure from the ‘Nat religion’ in Burma, sitting on an ‘Ogre’ (spirit, demon), richly decorated with mirrored plates. - Tribal Art

In Burma there are, alongside smaller tribal religions, two main religions: Buddhism and the old ‘Nat religion’. The latter recognises 37 ‘main Nats’ and many ‘sub Nats’. It has its own priests, trance dances, sacrificial rituals, processions etc. Its centre is Mount Bopa, near Bagan. However, ‘Nat temples’ are found all over Burma. The present wood sculpture originates from such a ‘Nat temple’. It displays a ‘Nat’ with a winged crown and a red point, with an upside down vase and sits over its ‘Ogre’ (spirit, demon). Next to the right knee of the ‘Nat’ sits a dove. The sacred object is painted, decorated with ‘Thayo technique’ and many small, round, white, green and red mirrored plates. It has the remains of an earlier gilding. It is a rare piece from the ‘Nat religion’ of Burma, a religion hardly known in our culture. With age-related colour scuffing and a crack on the front, below. Otherwise complete and in good condition.
Height: 64 cm.
Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)

Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna.
