Khmer Culture, Cambodia: a small stone bust of Buddha (fragment), in front of a ‘shield’ formed by protective Naga snakes. Style: Angkor Wat, 13th century. - Tribal Art

A small bust made of light grey stone, that probably originally depicted Buddha in modest monk’s robes, sitting on a Naga snake (a fragment). With an ‘ushnisha’ (‘wisdom bump’) on his head and long earlobes. Behind Buddha’s head arches a round ‘shield’ formed by the heads of the protective Naga snake (four of which still preserved, one piece broken off). There are some remains of black colouring in Buddha’s hair and red colouring on his monk’s robe. On the back side of the object there is a medallion with a central ‘sun disc’ (or flower), as well as the scales of the protective Naga snake in relief. The piece displays the remains of an old collection label on the back on the plinth.
Height: 10.5 cm; width: 9.5 cm.
