Khmer Culture, Cambodia: a large stone bust of a Buddha, with a ‘shield’ formed by the protective heads of the Naga snake. Style: Angkor Wat. 12th/13th century.
A bust made of yellow sandstone, that probably originally represented Buddha sitting on a Naga snake. The face of Buddha displays a very peaceful, good-tempered expression, with lowered eyes, a restrained smile on his lips and with long earlobes. On his head Buddha displays a tall ‘ushnisha’, the ‘wisdom bump’ of the enlightened. Behind the Buddha figure arches a round ‘shield’ formed by the heads of the protective Naga snake. It has all been carved from a single piece of stone. The reverse side of the Buddha sculpture is structured by the scales of the snake. There is a very old loss above and on the right side of the ‘Naga shield’. Some more recent pieces have broken off below, as well as some age-related cracks to the stone. An impressive object from the old Khmer culture.
