Afghanistan, Iran, Turkmenistan: tribe: Tekke Turkmens: a large ‘braid pendant’ of the Tekke Turkmens, also known as ‘heart plate’ or ‘Asik’. Made of silver, fire gilded, with five carnelians.
The girls of the Tekke Turkmens have two plaits as their hairstyle, whilst married women have only one thick plait on their back. This singular plait was traditionally decorated with pendants known as ‘Asik’ or ‘heart plates’. The present, large ‘Asik plate’ belonging to an adult Tekke woman is crafted from quality silver and displays on the front side especially delicate engraved decor in the typical, curved style of the Tekke Turkmens. Partly fire gilded and decorated with five smooth cut carnelian stones. It has a round grommet above and two sidelong eyelets to fasten the ‘heart plate’ onto the woman’s braid. An especially beautiful example of a braid pendant of the Tekke Turkmens. In excellent condition, no damage.
Height: 25 cm; width: 17 cm; weight: 310 grams.
19th century. (ME)
