Mixed lot (2 items): Oman, Tunisia: a curved ‘Khanjar’ dagger from Oman and a silver bangle from Tunisia.
1: A curved ‘Khanjar’ dagger from Oman (similar types of dagger are known as Jambiya in Yemen). The blade is slightly curved, with a ridge on both sides. The hilt, the sheath and the device at its centre – used to fasten the ‘Khanjar’ to a belt – are covered in high quality and lavishly decorated silver. It is made from thin, partly embossed sheet metal, as well as soldered silver wire crafted in strips of filigree spheres and floral rosettes. Only the rings on the belt fastening are made of silver-plated copper and the reverse of the sheath, bent to 90 degrees, is covered in green velvet.
Length: 28 cm; width: c. 20 cm (dagger in sheath). First half to mid-20th century.
2: A bangle cast from very good silver, engraved and punched. A style of Berber jewellery from Tunisia. It has an outwardly curving middle ridge. The ridge, as well as the surfaces above and below display engraved herringbone bands, as well as floral rosettes made up of small, punched circles. On the smooth inner side of the bangle there are four hallmarks. One of these is a ‘Tugra’ (Sultan’s seal) belonging to an Ottoman Turkish ruler (although Tunisia was ruled by local ‘Beys’, until 1881 it officially belonged to the Ottoman Empire).
Diameter: 6.5 cm; width: 4.1 cm.
19th century (before 1881).
Both objects in this mixed lot are old, in good condition and without significant damage. (ME)
