Libya, Egypt: a pair (2 items) of heavy bangles made of pure silver. A rare example of ‘Suar’ bracelet, that widens asymmetrically to the open side. Each has two side projections, is engraved on the outside and has four hallmarks on the inside.
These asymmetric ‘Suar’ bangles are found in the east of Libya, up to the Siwa Oasis – the easternmost settlement of the Berber – located on the other side of the border in Egypt. The heavy bracelets, crafted from thick, high quality silver, display accomplished engraving on the outside: flowers within crescent moons surrounded by floral and leafy tendrils, as well as a geometrically stylised, star-shaped, four-point flower, framed by a square. A thick, rectangular, cuboid projection is riveted to both sides of each bracelet. The hallmark of the silversmith is displayed on the outside, at the centre of another flower. Four further hallmarks are to be found on the smooth inside of the bangle. A perfect pair, these rare bangles show visible traces of use but no damage.
Height: 10.7 cm (highest point) and 6.7 cm (lowest point); diameter: c. 7 cm (both objects); weight: 580 grams (in total). (ME)
