1: An ivory bangle which, from its high, central opening for the hand of the wearer, runs conically to a projecting border. Decorated with all-round, fine grooves and three groups of incised circle and dot ornament. The underside of this bracelet is decorated with all-round, delicate grooves and partly dyed red. This type of ivory bangle was produced by the Fur in Sudan, and traded with the Zande and Mangbetu in the Congo.
Height: c. 3.6 cm (the hole on the inside); diameter: 11 cm (on the outside); 5.2 cm (on the inside).
2: An ivory bangle for men. A type of jewellery of the Giriama in Kenya. Carved out of four pieces of ivory, connected with small plaques of wood and with wooden pegs.
Diameter; 10 cm (on the outside); 5.2 cm (on the inside) and 1.2 cm thick.
First third of the 20th century.
Both objects are old. Their ivory is honey-coloured, partially darkened in patches, and they display noticeable traces of protracted wear but no damage. (ME) ASA
