Among the Lega, in eastern Congo, only the high-ranking members of the ‘Bwami’ league had the right to own objects of ivory. This privilege concerned all objects made of ivory, such as masks, figures etc. Bwami members of lesser rank were only allowed to own ivory spoons. These spoons played a role during legal questions and in jurisdiction. The ivory spoons of the Lega are differentiated due to the often very elaborate variety of the forms of their handles (see also cat. no. 119). The present two ivory spoons display a frequently occurring form of ivory Lega spoons. With deep, oval bowls and slightly curved, separated handles, that are connected at the end by an anchor-shaped button. Each spoon was carved from one piece of ivory. Both spoons display age-related, delicate and only superficial cracks, as well as a very good patina, varying from light-coloured honey yellow to reddish-brown, as is customary for old ivory. In best condition, with no significant damage. There is an inventory number from a collection, in white letters, on the underside of one of the handles.
Length: each 15 cm; width: 4 cm and 3.8 cm.
