Luba (or Baluba), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a chief-stool, with a kneeling, female caryatid.

Luba (or Baluba), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a chief-stool, with a kneeling, female caryatid. - Tribal Art

A caryatid stool of the Luba, from the southern Congo. Carved in hard, brown wood and dyed black, with a round seat and round base plate. In between kneels a woman as a caryatid on the base plate and holds the seat with both arms. The woman displays a triple crested coiffure, bangles and typical tribal decorative scarification marks on her face, on her chest, on her abdomen and on the upper thighs. The entire piece displays a very fine, old and shiny usage patina; especially the seat shows heavy colour scuffing through the protracted use of this stool. Minimal breakages to the rim of the base plate below. Otherwise no damage. There is an old collection number in white letters, on the border of the base plate on the front.
Height: 35.5 cm; diameter: 27.5 cm (seat and base plate).
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
