1: Women of well-off families of the Mongo and their neighbouring tribes (Ekonda, Ekota, Kundu etc.) in central Congo, south of the Congo River, wore such heavy anklets cast of metal (brass, bronze). Before these ‘Konga’ bracelets were put on, the legs were wrapped with fabric to protect them against injury. ‘Konga bracelets’ were also used as primitive money for bride price and other payments between families. The present ‘Konga bracelet’, in typical form, is made of brass.
Height: 10.5 cm; diameter: c. 10 cm (on the inside); weight: 1.68 kg.
2: A wooden mould, with which the blacksmiths of the Mongo produced the heavy ‘Konga’ anklets: the wooden model was pressed, with the relief side underneath, into fine sand. In this cavity in the sand the liquid metal was cast. In firm but still hot condition, the blacksmith now took the flat cast piece and hammered it over a robust branch into the desired, round form.
Length: c. 30 cm; width: c. 14 cm (middle). (ME)
