Mongo tribe, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a wooden shield traditionally used by certain tribes of the Mongo tribes (Saka, Ngandu etc.) in the north-west rain forest of the Congo. - Tribal Art

The oblong shield was carved of a piece of relatively thin wood, including the grip on the back. The facade is divided into five fields by means of two vertical reinforcement bulges, and by a transverse field; these are alternatingly coloured black and white. The back is black. At the top a hanging cord of vegetal rattan strips is attached through two holes. A piece with only minimal damage (gashes, some breakage) and colour abrasion. The very good, shiny patina on the grip at the back points to long usage.
Height: 160 cm; width: 36 cm.
First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Austrian private collection. According to the information of the consignor, acquired in 1976 in Bukavu, Congo.

Lit.:
‘Afrikanische Schilde’ by Plaschke & Zirngibl, ill. 69; ‘Shields. From the Collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum, ill. 21.
