Salampasu (or Basalampasu), Democratic Republic of Congo: a typical mask of the Salampasu, originally dyed white.
A mask of the Salampasu, of the ‘Kasangu’ type, that may only be worn by successful warriors. Made of light-coloured hard wood. In characteristic form: with bulging, wide forehead, straight eyebrows, with wide, short nose, rectangular mouth with pointed rows of teeth and with a pointed chin. With noticeable remains of earlier, white colouring. The fastening eyelets on this mask are partly rectangular (an old type). Good shiny patina on the rear. No damage.
Height: 26 cm; width: 18 cm.
