Congo tribes, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a stool or back rest with two legs and fine relief decoration.
Such and similar two-legged stools, which are mainly used as back rests – tipped onto one side – are widespread among a variety of tribes in the Congo (Songye, Jonga, Sankuru and others). The present back rest is an especially old piece, made of hard wood and dyed black. The upper seat surface displays a very finely worked geometric relief decoration. A small, old fracture to both of the short ends. Otherwise no damage. It has a visibly very old, slightly encrusted, shiny patina as a result of protracted use.
Height: 32 cm (tipped); length: 47.5 cm (seat); width: 16 cm (seat).
