Mixed lot (2 pieces): Yoruba, Benin, Nigeria: an old ceremonial sword, with a projection in the form of a ‘hand’, and an iron ritual staff, called ‘Opa Osanyin’, with a bird on top, for healing the sick. - Tribal Art

1: A very old ceremonial sword made of iron. From the tribal group of the Yoruba people who live on the other side of the border of Nigeria in the country of Benin (formerly Dahomey). This tribal group of the Yoruba people is called ‘Nago’. The iron sword blade, sharpened on one side, displays a characteristic Yoruba type, becoming broader towards the tip of the blade. At the front, wider part there is an openwork recessed cross. On one side, the iron blade displays a diagonal line of six punched circles, and beneath these an additional place with punched decoration. The entire surface of the iron blade appears to be corroded. As if this ritual sword of the Nago has been buried in the ground for a long time. The hilt is made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) using ‘waste mould’ casting. Here, a cast projection in the form of an open, small hand with five fingers protrudes from the hilt at right angles (length: 7 cm; width: 6 cm). Overall a very old, interesting piece with appropriate age and usage patina. Length: 59 cm (in total); 19th century or earlier.
2: A ritual staff of the Yoruba people, cast from a piece of iron. With a bird at the top, and six projections at the side below, also symbolising birds. These iron bird-staffs are called ‘Opa Osanyin’. They are the sign of healers and herbalists of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, who heal the sick by means of healing plants and other substances. An old and complete object. No damage.
Height: c. 25 cm; width: c. 11 cm.
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
