The ‘Calao bird’, a stylised hornbill, is der ‘sacred bird’ of the Senufo people. He appears in creation myths, and is viewed as very wise and loyal. Large figures of the ‘Calao bird’ guard shrines and temples in the ‘sacred groves’ of the Poro group of the Senufo people. ‘Calao birds’ also decorate the heddle pulleys and many other objects of the Senufo people. On the ritual ladle for sacrificial offerings of drinks (millet beer et al.), offered here, a standing ‘Calao bird’ forms the handle. All carved from a single piece of hard wood and coloured black-brown. An old break to the openwork lower corner of the bird’s right wing. Otherwise no damage. Colour slightly scuffed on the handle, through long use. A beautiful, typical object from the Senufo, with magnificent usage patina.
Height: c. 26 cm.
