This ancestor figure commemorates an important chief of the Baule people. Made of hard, light-coloured wood, with the figure dyed black. The ancestor sits on a typical Baule stool, on a rounded base. He displays a finely lined crested coiffure above his high forehead, and tribal typical decorative scarification marks on the temples, cheeks, chest and back, as well as ornamental rings on his upper arm and an old, original loincloth. A plaited, black beard of plant fibres is tied on to his chin, and in his right hand he holds a long staff of a dignitary or chief. At the base below there are two cracks and a small breakage at the back. Otherwise no damage. A very typical Baule piece, with good patina.
Height: 45 cm. First half of the 20th century.
