Baule, Ivory Coast: a rare ‘elephant mask’. - Tribal Art

An ‘elephant mask’ of the Baule people, made out of hard, heavy wood and dyed black on the front. The face consists of a mixture of human features (eyes, nose) with an elephant head (trunk, tusks, ears). With relief decoration on both cheeks, as well as with embossed brass decoration on the top of the head, around the eyes and on the trunk. Small, old breakages to the back rim above, and to the tip of the right tusk. Minor cracks due to age. Otherwise no damage. Very good traces of use and shiny patina on the front, on the back, on the inside, as well as on the holes to fasten the mask on to the head of the mask dancer (above) and on the holes for the bite bar (at the bottom).
A very rare, old piece.
Height: 42 cm.
First third of the 20th century. (ME)
