Bobo, Bwa or Gurunsi, Burkina Faso: a large bird-head mask, with a crocodile as crest, painted white, red and black, with original, old fibre hanging.
A type of mask which is found amongst the tribes of the savanna, the Bobo, Bwa, Gurunsi or Nuna in Burkina Faso. Such crest masks are worn obliquely on the head, and the masked dancer looks out through the large beak. The present composite mask consists of the head of a so-called ‘Calao bird’ with large beak. The ‘Calao bird’ is a hornbill, which plays an important role in the myths of origin of many peoples of west Africa (for example, amongst the Senufo, the Dan, and others). Here the Calao bird displays an entire crocodile as crest. Carved out of one piece of hard, light-coloured wood. The entire composition is painted with clear, flat, geometric motifs, with chequerboard patterns, circles, dots, stripes and zigzag bands of white, red and black natural dyes, in an effective and starkly contrasting manner. With the old, original hanging of the mask costume consisting of dry, light brown plant fibres. A very complete object with only minor, old colour scuffing and a small fracture to the lower edge. Otherwise no damage.
