Bambara (or Bamana), Mali: an old door lock in the form of a person, with cross-bar.
A typical door lock made of light-coloured, hard wood, for a millet granary of the Bambara, workers of the land in the savanna of Mali. A door lock in the form of a human figure, to be understood as a ‘guardian’. The figure displays a high hairstyle (or headdress) and a carefully carved face with serious expression. The head decoration, the body and the cross-bar are geometrically ornamented on the front side with bands of etched lines and rows of punched circles. A piece with exceptional, partly shiny, old usage patina on the front (the bare reverse was attached to the door leaf).
There is no noteworthy damage.
Height: 48 cm (figure), width: 41 cm (cross-bar).
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Austrian private collection.
Lit.:
‘Bamana. Afrikanische Kunst aus Mali’ by Jean-Paul Colleyn, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, catalogue, ill. 29, 31, 36, 38.
