Mercury with the attributes, winged helmet and sandals seated on a money chest in a chariot atop a cloud base, drawn by two ravens, in front of him a rooster, in the foreground a small genius with money bag and short sword, the facing side of the curving tiered base with gilt edging, pink bands and gilt meander relief, flat back, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, height: 31 cm, length: 43 cm, restorations, Meissen, underglaze blue crossed swords, prime and secondary quality, mid-19th cent., model no. 30, 30, former no. 70, model by J. Mercury, god of merchants and thieves; ravens are considered larcenous, the rooster is expected to wake people. In Homer's hymn to Mercury, he deceives humanity during the dark of the night. The small genius, holding a money bag, refers to his role as god of merchants. The “Merkur” group was commissioned by Catherine II. of Russia for the pavilion at the Rodelberge in Oranienbaum.
