Mercury, god of merchants and thieves; ravens are considered larcenous, the rooster is expected to wake people. In Homer's hymn to Mercury, he deceives humanity during the dark of the night. The small genius, holding a money bag, refers to his role as god of merchants. The “Merkur” group was commissioned by Catherine II. of Russia for the pavilion at the Rodelberge in Oranienbaum.
