Outstanding and extremely rare English lady’s desk or child’s desk, - Oggetti d'arte (mobili, sculture, vetri, porcellane)

Known as a forme violonée, stamped "DUVEEN LONDON" (Joseph Joel Duveen 1843-1908), 2nd half of the 19th century. A serpentine-bombé form with masterly marquetry in rosewood, mahogany and tulipwood, also with rich high quality bronze doré mounts, a marble top, 1 door, 1 drawer, and a fall-front writing surface with a 4-drawer fitted interior. 120 x 69 x 55 cm. In very fine condition. (PZ)

Joseph Joel Duveen was, together with his brother Henry J. Duveen and later also his son, Joseph, one of the greatest and most important art dealers in Europe and North America. He achieved considerable wealth through his art dealing and was an active donor to English art museums. In 1908 he financed the new Turner wing of the Tate Gallery in London. On 26 June 1908 Duveen was knighted. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Willesden, London. The present desk was modelled after a piece by the French cabinet maker Jean-Francois Dubut.
