Lotto No. 536

Important salon chest of drawers,

Important salon chest of drawers, - Oggetti d'arte (mobili, sculture, vetri, porcellane)

Louis XVI period, Ferdinand Bury (maître 1774), France circa 1780. In oak with tulipwood veneer, richly decorated with gilt bronze mounts, with three drawers, the lower two being "sans traverse", and a Carrara marble top, the edges inlaid with ornamental bands. The back right support stamped "F. BURY". 87.5 x 106.5 x 53 cm. Predominantly original condition, carefully restored. (MIN)

Known in his own time under the artistic name of "Ferdinand", Bury enjoyed an excellent clientele, with the Marquis of Hertford being one of the most important clients. This chest of drawers bears close comparison to the Louis XVI chest of drawers commissioned by the Marquis of Hertford (Christie's Paris, 14 December 2004). Alongside the comparable construction, some of the same bronze mounts were used (fluting, corner mounts, sabots, mouldings). Most of the bronzes on Ferdinand Bury’s furniture were by Antoine-Andre Ravio, whose reputation equalled that of Thomire. Works by Bury are to be found in well-known collections and museums, including Louvre. Lit.: -Jean Nicolay "L'Art et la Maniere des Maitres ebenistes Francais au XVIII siecle". pp. 26-27 -Comte Francois de Salverte "Les Ebenistes du XVIII siecle". pp. 44-45 -Pierre Kjellberg "Le Mobilier Francais du XVIII siecle". pp 126 -127
