Anthonius Leemans, probably a brother of the painter Johannes Leemans, specialised in trompe-l’oeil still lifes featuring hunting equipment or musical instruments. The artist sought to render the illusion of real objects on a real wall through skilful handling of light and shadow and observation of the rules of perspective.
