Mathys Schoevaerdts

Mathys Schoevaerdts - Dipinti antichi

(Brussels circa 1665 - after 1702)
A view of the Église de Saint Sulpice in Paris,
oil on panel, 29 x 40 cm, framed

The church of Saint-Sulpice is located in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris and is dedicated to Saint Sulpicius II of Bourges. Founded in the 12th century, it was partially demolished in the 17th century and rebuilt according to plans by Daniel Gittard. The present painting shows Saint-Sulpice before its reconstruction, as is confirmed by an engraving by Jacques van Merle (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes, Vues des différentes églises de Paris, inv 794.1.5505).

Mathys Schoevaerdts was apprenticed to the landscapist Adriaen Frans Boudewyns in 1682. In 1690 he was appointed master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. His accurately studied landscapes are occasionally mistaken for those by Pieter Bout or Adriaen Frans Boudewyns.
