Lotto No. 101

Frans Ykens

Frans Ykens - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1601–1693)
A kitchen still life featuring the scene of Christ in the House of Martha and Mary,
signed right of centre: Francisco Ykens,
oil on canvas, 162 x 242.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Lempertz, Cologne, 16th November 2013, lot 1260 (sold for € 109,800)

Written certificates issued by Ferdinando Arisi and Ursula Härting (18th February 2002) are available.

Frans Ykens, who had been apprenticed to his uncle, Osias Beert I, and became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1630/31, is especially known for his floral wreaths around medallions enclosing religious scenes, most of which the artist painted himself. Occasionally, he also painted large kitchen still lifes that reveal Frans Snyder’s influence. The incorporation of a religious scene into the background of the present kitchen still life recalls the art of such predecessors as Joachim Beuckelaer, but had actually become unnecessary, since still life had long been established as an autonomous genre by the time the painting was executed. Rubens owned five paintings by Frans Ykens’ hand, speaking to Ykens’ reputation among his contemporaries.
