Lotto No. 7

School of Antwerp, early 16th Century

School of Antwerp, early 16th Century - Dipinti antichi

The Madonna and Child enthroned with the Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Margaret of Antioch,
oil on panel, 83.5 x 67.2 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, 30th April 1907, lot 28 (as Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen);
Private collection, Munich;
with Scheidwimmer, Munich, 1994;
Private collection, Germany

We are grateful to Peter van den Brink of the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, Aachen for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. He believes that the present painting was executed in the workshop of the Master of 1518. The figures of the Child and Saint Catherine are based on models used in the altarpiece painted by the Master of 1518 in the Church of Our Lady, Lübeck, Germany.

An alternative attribution to Goswyn van der Weyden (circa 1465 – after 1538) has been suggested, based on the comparison to a painting of the same subject by van der Weyden that was sold at Christie’s, London, 7 July 2004, lot 18. The present painting is also reminiscent of a panel depicting the Virgin and two female saints that was in the Hoe Collection, New York (see: M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. XI, Leiden 1974, p. 22 and pl. 28).
