Johann Evangelist Scheffer von Leonhardshoff, a significant representative of Romanticism, studied at the Viennese Academy. There, he came to know such fellow painters as Friedrich Overbeck and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. The contents of his painting were mostly of a Christian, religious nature, which he had intensified during his stay as a student in Venice and Rome. In 1815, the Brotherhood of St. Luke, native to Rome, took the artist in. Due to his poor health, the artist returned to Austria. His fellow painters gave him the nickname “Raffaelino”, for he made a mark by copying the works of Raphael. Scheffer von Leonhardshoff, who died early, was also featured in the Belvedere with his work “Die tote heilige Cäcilia” [The dead Saint Cecilia]. Despite his early death – he died at only 27 – he was an important representative of an art devoted to religious themes in the Late Romantic period.
