Architect Josef Místecký first graduated from the State School of Woodworking in his hometown. In 1915 he moved to Prague to study with Josip Plečnik at the Academy of Applied Arts; after the war ended he continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Jan Kotěra. After completing his studies he returned to the State School of Woodworking, where he devoted himself to teaching. He supervised many succesful students (Václav Hilský, Richard Podzemný, Zdeněk Plesník). Josef Místecký was also involved with his own architectural and design work. He is the author of a number of villas and public buildings mainly in his native region. In 1926 he designed his first modernist style villa Valašské Meziříčí; while his second villa that he designed in 1934 is already purely functionalistic. Most famous he is for his interior designs, particularly furniture, carpets and lighting. Well-known are his luxurious furniture sets in the Art Deco style; one of his bedrooms was awarded a Honour Award at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925. After 1930 he left decorativism and inclined towards functionalism; a typical example are the designs for his own villa from this time. The offered armchair comes from the living room of his villa, modern is the use of curved wooden slats, inserted into which are simple cross-laid straps.
