Lotto No. 415

Černý Jan (Rychnov 1907 - 1978) and Ryba Jiří (Stará Paka 1938)

A Nude Standing, smoky topaz glass, fused in a mould, signed and dated prof. Jan Černý J. Ryba 69, height 18 cm (Zí)

Jan Černý attended the sculpting studio (Professor Mařatka) and the glassmaking studio (Professor Štipl) at the Academy of Arts. From 1947, he taught at the Glassmaking School in Železný Brod. Jan Černý had dealt with the technology of glass melting since the 1940’s; he associated his creation of designs with this technique. In the 1960’s he became the designer of the Maják Coop in Jablonec, where he realised a large number of glass reliefs in accordance with his own designs. There he started to work with his student Jiří Ryba, with whom he created cca. seventy different works. Their joint work with a typically expressive stylisation that is characterised by its sculptural approach is better known abroad than it is in the Czech Republic and in terms of its technology it is recognised as being pioneering. In the 1990’s their work inspired a whole new generation of glassmakers. In the 1970’s Jan Černý together with Jiří Ryba had realised their designs for three-dimensional sculptures, usually by producing just one item of each unique work.
