Northwest Persia (Iran), c. 255 x 199 cm, second half of the 19th century, symmetrical knots, slightly layered, c. 700,000 kts/sqm, single-weft with cotton; rare large silk carpet with vaq-vaq tree from Persian mythology, along the trunk of the “speaking” tree are beasts of prey, wild boars, elephant and dragon-like figures, on the treetop triumphs the pockmarked demon Akvan, holding a lion and ape in his clutches, very moving subject in good colours, the carpet is in very good condition with consistently high silk pile, there is a darned area on the head of the preying lion in the oxidised orange, soft feel with firm, not brittle foundation.
