Johann Georg Ziesenis, a pair (2)
(Copenhagen 1716–1776 Hanover)
Portraits of an unidentified couple,
the female portrait signed and dated on the reverse: J. G. Ziesenis/ pinxit 1746,
oil on canvas, each 76 x 61 cm, framed (2)
The present pair comes with a certificate issued by Karin Schrader, author of the catalogue raisonné of the work of Johann Georg Ziesenis. She assumes that the present sitters were wealthy citizens of Frankfurt. The couple can probably be identified as the Frankfurt wine merchant Josef Maria Belli (1688–1767) and his wife, Maria Catharina Lindt (1709–1781) (see K. Schrader, Der Bildnismaler Johann Georg Ziesenis, Leben und Werk mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Münster 1995, nos. 12 and 13).
