Indonesia, Bali: an ornate dagger, called 'kris', with a slightly wavy blade, carved hilt and sheath covered in silver. - Tribal Art - Africa

An ornate kris from Bali, with a blackened, slightly wavy (5 waves), pamor blade. Made of precious wood, the hilt is dyed black and depicts in fine carving the god 'Bataru Bayu'. This is the god of welfare and abundance (a version of the Indian ‘lord of the winds’ Vayu). His right hand holds a ‘magic vessel’, and his left a corner of his ‘sarong’ wrapover skirt. The ring between the blade and hilt (‘Mendak’) is made of silver with 6 violet glass pearls set in it. The 'boat' of the sheath ('Wranka') is made of brown precious wood, carved in the rounded Bali style. The lower, long part of the sheath (‘Pendok’) is thoroughly cloaked in silver of the best quality and on both sides richly chased and engraved with blossom and leaf tendrils and decorative bands. A magnificent, elaborately crafted object, with signs of usage on the hilt and sheath. No damage! Length: 69 cm (in total). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
