An Indonesian dagger called kris, in the typical form of the Buginese (or Bugis), the famous seafarers living on the southern island of Sulawesi. With a straight, pamor blade (forged out of numerous layers of iron). The hilt and sheath are made of precious wood. Only the lower point of the sheath, the ‘shoe’, is made of dark horn. The hilt is presented as a stylised ‘Garuda’ (in Hinduism, the eagle Garuda is the mythical mount of Lord Vishnu). The ring between the blade and hilt ('Mendak') is made of copper and bears a two-line all-round inscription in Arabic script (made of silver?). A minor fracture to the hilt. Otherwise no damage. Length: 44 cm (dagger in sheath). (ME)
