Indonesia, Borneo (Kalimantan), Dayak: a very old memorial or guardian figure, called 'Hampatong'.
Hampatong' is the name given to such ancestor and guardian figures made of hardwood. Different Dayak groups set them up in Borneo, both as memorial sculptures to the important deceased at burial sites, or as ‘guardians’ in entrances to their longhouses for protection against evil spirits.
The present 'Hampatong' is carved from a single piece of very hard ‘iron wood’. Stylistically probably of the Ot-Danum-Dayak. This arrowlike sculpture originally bore a crest on its (heavily weathered) head. The elongated oval head has eyebrow arches above well outlined eyes, a long flat nose and an open mouth. The left arm and both legs stand freely. The whole sculpture exhibits clear signs of dramatic weathering (erosions and cracks) in the right, particularly exposed places. Resulting all from having stood in the open for a very long time. An old collection number ‘177’ has been painted in white on the back of the figure. Height: 83 cm; 18th/19th century or earlier. (ME)
Provenance:
Private Collection, London, England; Austrian Private Collection.
Lit.:
'Hornbill and Dragon' by Bernard Sellato, ill. p. 94, p. 244, p. 249, p. 250, p. 252, p. 253; 'Headhunters & Woodcarvers' by Francois Coppens, ill. 9, 49; 'The eloquent Dead' by Jerome Feldman, ill. 138, 139; 'Arts primitifs de L'Asie du Sud-Est' by Alain Schoffel, ill. 120.
