Mixed lot (2 items), Burma (Myanmar): Two charming, dancing figures in court costumes, with remnants of earlier gilding, 19th century. - Tribal Art - Africa

The present two figures, dressed in fine courtly costumes and presented in very similar dance poses (one turning to the right, the other to the left) originate in Burma. Judging from their turban-like headgear, these are representations of men -- the so-called ‘sword dancers’. What would have been their wooden hand-held swords have been lost to time. The figures themselves are carved out of wood. The upper arms and the feet, however, have been produced as additions and fixed to the bodies with iron posts. The whole figures have been coated with red lacquer and eventually gilded (with gold lacquer). In addition, the flat, frontal stretches of clothing have been elaborately embellished with round white, green and red mirror plates. Minor age-related damage (a broken left arm fixed back with a nail at the time, a scuffed nose, a few lost mirror plates as well as the swords, loosened post connections in two of the feet.
Considering their age, however, the two figures are in good condition! Height: each c. 35 cm. 19th century. (ME)
