India: A ritual Hindu object called ‘naga linga’ for an alter of the Lord Shiva.

India: A ritual Hindu object called ‘naga linga’ for an alter of the Lord Shiva. - Tribal Art - Africa

Made of cast brass. With a Shiva lingam and a yoni, guarded by the snake Naga. Originating in Karnataka, Southwest India. A small lingam (phallus) symbolising the Hindu god Shiva is placed upon a yoni (the female sex), and both on top of the coiled body of the mythical snake Naga (a cobra). The Naga cobra looms protectively over Lord Shiva (represented as lingam with yoni) with its outstretched neck shield and five crowned heads (three of the crowns lost). Such ‘naga lingas’ are favoured ritual objects at domestic Hindu altars. Made of yellow cast-alloy (brass) and executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. Two parts put together. With minor, age-related damage (3 crowns broken off the top). Visibly old usage patina. Height: 23 cm; Width: 11 cm (Naga shield); Diameter: 11 cm (below); 19th century or earlier. (ME)

Lit.: 'Aditi', catalogue for the Festival of India, London, 1982, ill. 2.
