Tekke Turkmen, Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan: A pair (2 items) of temple pendants of the Tekke Turkmen. Made of silver, silver alloy and brass.

Tekke Turkmen, Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan: A pair (2 items) of temple pendants of the Tekke Turkmen. Made of silver, silver alloy and brass. - Tribal Art - Africa

Turkmen live irrespective of borders in the tri-national corner between Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iran. The Tekke Turkmen in particular are known for their beautiful jewelery. The present pair of ornaments are not earrings, but rather so-called temple pendants, as worn hanging on the left and right side of the bonnets of the Tekke Turkmen women. Made in the typical fashion, with the charming, curved Tekke decorative motifs etched and engraved, as well as with plates and bars of silver contrasting with the yellow metal. Often Tekke ornaments are partly fire-gilt, but in this case it is a coating of brass. A polished carnelian stone is set in each of the central triangles of the temple pendants and on the sides of each of these in silver chains hang red glass stones. Each of the two big pendants has 8 chased and soldiered small pendants at the ends of silver chains. A beautiful, rare pair with visibly old signs of use. Length: each 12 cm (the ornamental plate alone); each 24 cm (in total, with pendant); Width: each 7 cm. Late 19th century to early 20th century. (ME)
